A scratcher does not have to be beige. This one is a clean rectangle of corrugated cardboard, 44 cm long, wrapped along both long sides in a neon pink and magenta checkerboard with a small yellow zeze badge at the centre, and finished in pale sky blue across each end. Left out on the floor it reads as a graphic object rather than as pet kit, which is rather the point of it.

The scratching surface is the exposed edge of the corrugated board itself, a dense field of open flutes running the full length of the pad. Cats hook their claws in and pull, and the board gives just enough resistance to be worth the effort, which is what makes it a credible alternative to the arm of a sofa.
